This policy describes how the Mr Miles mobile apps for Android and iOS and this website (mrmiles.app) handle information. Soft-launch markets: United States, Germany, and Switzerland.
Primary framework: the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP / nDSG). For users in the EEA (including Germany) we also take account of the GDPR.
Summary
- No Mr Miles account; no Mr Miles servers for the logbook; no AdMob; no Firebase backup cloud.
- Your logbook is stored on your device.
- On Android, the app disables Android Auto Backup for itself, so Google’s usual phone backup does not copy your logbook into your Google account backup.
- On iOS, the logbook is left out of iCloud and computer backups unless you turn on the in-app “iCloud backup” switch, which is off by default. App settings (such as your consent choices and tax country) are always included in your iPhone backup. Neither is a Mr Miles cloud.
- Location / GPS is core to the app, including in the background as the OS allows.
- Local-only mode turns off map tiles and address lookup. On Android that means Google map tiles and Google geocoding. On iOS that means Apple map tiles and Apple address lookup. Routes are drawn from recorded points. The logbook itself never goes to a Mr Miles cloud.
- What may leave the device (details below): on Android, Google Maps geocoding and tiles unless Local-only is on; on iOS, Apple map tiles and Apple address lookup unless Local-only is on; Google Play Billing and/or Apple In-App Purchase (StoreKit) for Pro; a backup you export; an iCloud backup of the logbook on iOS if you turn that on; a support email you choose to send; and, only if you turn telemetry on, Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (both apps), never trips, places, or addresses. The tax country is suggested on the device from phone settings, and nothing is sent for it.
- Not tax advice.
No accounts
Mr Miles does not require registration or a Mr Miles account. We do not operate a user identity system for the app.
On-device logbook
Trips, route points, classifications, vehicles, places, rates, notes, and related logbook data are stored locally in the app’s private storage on your device (on Android, in a Room database).
Android: Auto Backup is off for this app (android:allowBackup=false), so your mileage logbook is not included in Google’s usual phone backup.
iOS: The logbook is stored in the app’s private local storage and is excluded from iCloud Backup and computer (Finder) backups unless you turn on the in-app “iCloud backup” switch, which is off by default. If you turn it on, the logbook is included in your device backup, which Apple stores under your Apple account. That is not a Mr Miles cloud sync. App settings, including your consent choices and tax country, are always part of the normal iPhone backup.
Uninstalling or clearing app data removes the local store unless you exported a backup elsewhere. There is no Mr Miles cloud sync of the logbook. That does not mean nothing ever leaves the device; see “What may leave the device” below.
Location and GPS
Accurate location is essential for automatic mileage logging. Mr Miles may access location (including in the background, as permitted by the OS and your settings) to detect trips, calculate distance, and support map-related features. Activity Recognition and optional Bluetooth car-stereo association may help detect driving if you enable them. You control permissions in your device settings (Android or iOS); without location, automatic logging will not work as intended.
Local-only mode
When Local-only mode is on:
- On Android, Mr Miles does not request Google map tiles or Google Geocoding.
- On iOS, Mr Miles does not request Apple map tiles or Apple address lookup (CLGeocoder).
Routes are shown from recorded points on the device.
Logbook content stays on-device either way. Other flows (App Store / Google Play billing; Firebase if telemetry is on; backups you export) remain as described below.
What may leave the device
Some features send limited data to third parties. None of these is a Mr Miles logbook cloud.
- Android — Google Maps geocoding. When you use Maps features and Local-only is off, trip endpoint coordinates may be sent to Google to resolve addresses.
- Android — Google Maps tiles. When the map is shown and Local-only is off, the Maps SDK loads map tiles from Google.
- iOS — Apple maps and addresses. When Local-only is off, map tiles come from Apple (MapKit) and addresses may be resolved with Apple (CLGeocoder). Local-only turns both off.
- iOS — iCloud backup (optional). If you turn on the in-app “iCloud backup” switch, the logbook is included in your iCloud or computer backup, which Apple stores under your Apple account. App settings are always in that backup.
- App Store / Google Play billing — When you buy or restore Pro, Apple or Google (as applicable) handles purchase and entitlement data (they process payment details; we never see your payment card).
- Backup you create — If you export via the system document / Files picker, a file goes to a destination you choose (phone storage, a cloud drive app in the picker, etc.).
- Support email — If you use the in-app feedback button and send the email, we receive your email address, your message, and the app version, build, operating system version, and device model filled into the draft.
- Firebase telemetry — Off unless you turn telemetry on (onboarding switch, and later in Settings). On both Android and iOS, Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics crash reports; neither app records screen views in Analytics. Never trips, places, or addresses. You can turn it off again at any time.
Android Maps features are also subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. iOS map and address features are subject to Apple’s terms and privacy policy.
We do not sell your personal data.
Purposes
We use information to:
- Provide the logbook and Pro features you request
- Show maps and resolve addresses when Local-only is off (Google on Android, Apple on iOS)
- Suggest a tax country on the device from phone settings (Android: SIM, then mobile network, then language region; iOS: region setting); nothing is sent for this
- Keep the app stable and understand aggregate usage when telemetry is on (see above)
- Answer support emails you send us and fix the problems you report
- Respond to lawful requests where applicable
Typical legal bases under Swiss / GDPR rules: performance of the contract (providing the app), your request or consent (e.g. location permissions, telemetry), and our legitimate interest in running a stable product.
Backups you create
Export uses the system document / Files picker on your device (Android or iOS), so you choose the destination (local storage, a cloud drive app in the picker, etc.). Gira Mobile does not receive those files unless you separately send them to us (e.g. by email for support). There is no Mr Miles OAuth-to-Drive backup and no Firebase backup cloud.
Support email
If you use the in-app feedback button, your mail app opens a draft to info@gira.me with the app version, build, operating system version, and device model filled in. Nothing is sent until you press Send, and you can edit or delete those details first. We use what you send only to answer you and fix problems, and keep it only as long as needed for that.
Analytics and crash reporting
Telemetry is off unless you turn it on, with the onboarding switch and later in Settings, and you can turn it off again at any time. On both Android and iOS it means Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics. Neither app records screen views in Analytics. They are configured not to receive trip routes, GPS traces, street addresses, or other logbook contents.
This website
mrmiles.app is a static informational site. It does not use advertising trackers or tracking cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Standard host logs (e.g. IP address, user agent) may be processed by the hosting provider (e.g. Vercel) to deliver the site.
Retention and security
On-device logbook: until you delete entries or uninstall (normal OS behaviour). Exported backups: under your control. OS backups: see Android Auto Backup / iCloud notes above. Google / Apple / Firebase retention follows their policies and your settings. We rely on app-private storage and OS protections; no storage is perfectly secure, so protect your device and any backups you make.
Third-party services (Google Maps, Google Play, Apple App Store / StoreKit, Firebase) may process data in the United States or elsewhere under their own terms and safeguards. Mr Miles itself does not operate a logbook cloud that transfers your trips to our servers.
Your rights
Depending on your location (Switzerland / EEA / other), you may have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and withdrawal of consent (e.g. for telemetry). Because the logbook lives on your device, many of these are best exercised in the app (edit, delete, export, uninstall, Local-only, telemetry off). For anything else, contact info@gira.me.
Children
Mr Miles is intended for users 18 years or older. Do not use the app if you are under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Driving safety
Do not interact with the app while driving. Use automatic features responsibly and obey traffic laws. See also the Terms.
Not tax advice
Mr Miles helps you keep a mileage / Fahrtenbuch-style record. It is not tax, legal, or accounting advice. Deductibility and acceptance by tax authorities depend on your situation; that risk is yours. See also the Terms.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted at https://mrmiles.app/privacy with a new “Last updated” date.
You are responsible for checking this page regularly. For material changes, we may (but are not obliged to) also mention them in an app update or an in-app notice. We do not require you to re-confirm or re-accept this Privacy Policy in the app when it changes.
If you continue to use Mr Miles after an updated Privacy Policy is posted, you accept the updated version, to the extent permitted by applicable law. If you do not agree, stop using the app and uninstall it.
